ILLUSTRATION ‘INVENTIONS’:
RATIONALE:

This project develops research skills and your abilities to respond to a concept within design. It encourages you to promote a product and begin to appreciate a style for working.

Choose 1 of the following inventions:

Telephone - Alexander Graham Bell
Television - John Logie Baird
Bra - Herminie Cadolle
Light bulbs - Thomas Edison
Stiletto heels - Roger Vivier
Radio - Marconi

AIM:

Produce a promotional T-shirt that celebrates and expresses an original way of presenting this invention. You are then to package the product inventively.

You should start by producing a sketchbook bursting with brainstorms, drawings and ideas covering anything to do with your invention whatsoever. This should be a thorough and exploration of the invention’s qualities –its look, aspirations, comic humour; pages should reflect a sense of history, political and social events from the time.

YOU SHOULD BRING IN AN EXAMPLE OF YOUR INVENTION FOR A DRAWING WORKSHOP AND KEEP IT FOR THE DURATION OF THIS PROJECT. TRY TO FIND SOMETHING WITH CHARACTER THAT WOULD BE INTERESTING TO DRAW. YOU MUST ALL HAVE SOMETHING, START COLLECTING NOW.

On the very first day you should start drawing – ideas, possibilities, fast and furious.
Your sketchbook may start out as quite straightforward ideas such as objective observational drawing and additionally you should think about more outrageous things you can do with the product other than what it was intended for. It can be humorous, factual, serious or light-hearted, surreal or poignant. It may reflect a light-hearted use within today’s world, draw upon well known sayings or ideas about our culture and way of living.

Consider:

Telephones - What would life be like without the phone? What would we do? Can you think of how life would be different? What ways of communicating would we use? – pigeon post, letter, bow and arrow, letter in a bottle, horseback, morse code etc Can you use these methods of communication to refer to to come up with a witty or clever image.
Stilletos - How do we regard it ? ie Stilettos are a girls necessity, what other things are necessary to our lives?- food, would you have stilettos in fridges as a staple diet, a pile of shoes to keep warm to.
Television - TV is addictive , what else is addictive – drugs, sex, alcohol etc Can you compare it to this? Who invented it was there a race on to see who could do it? Can you visualise this with the main people on a podium, at the starter line?
What are the conversations you have had on the phone? Can you visualise them?
You must draw extensively from your object and you will be doing this in the format of workshops.

• You may wish to visualise a plan of your invention within a blueprint pattern. You may want to indicate something about the inventor or the materials involved or include a description of text concerning when or how it evolved, statistics of how it has changed over the years, or who has used it and how it has changed people’s lives in the 21st century. Nostalgic photographs of images relating to this time, date, headlines and specific information, technical, maps, and location images may give a sense of time.

• It could contain factual information that indicates what the invention stands for and how it is revered today i.e. the bra is a symbol of the 1970s that could show women’s liberation, emancipation, sexual liberation etc; from Madonna’s iconic ‘cones’ to 2000s Wonder bra which can change your life – the ‘flaunt it if you have it’ attitude! It could contrastingly also be used as a catapult!.

• You may want to show how it has been reflected within contemporary life i.e. the television may be expressed by the image of a man eating his dinner off the TV entitled ‘TV dinners’

• The telephone could be visualised by 2 people holding tin cans connected by a piece of string across a map or use special moments in life that are shared between people hundreds of miles away.

• A Stiletto could be used flippantly for cracking walnuts or making yourself taller, or as a lethal weapon.

Time: 4 weeks

Week 1 – research, brainstorming and experimentation with imaging, artist research, lots and lots of drawing and ideas in sketchbooks. Primarily you will spend this week drawing, brainstorming and researching until you get a series of really good designs to go develop.

Week 2 – experimenting with imagery taking photo shoot, collecting necessary information sections from sketchbooks, packaging ideas in mock up, text etc

Week 3 developments of ideas, layouts, final editions of design pieces, print images onto T shirt.

Week 4 Printing of T shirt, inventive packaging and final evaluation and annotation of sketchbooks.

PROCEDURE: WEEK1

1. Before you begin anything for this project you need to find out about your invention in depth: when, where, what, how many, who etc. Produce at least 20 A3 sides researching and brainstorming extensively into this invention so that you have ample information to work with and to generate ideas. This should include the investigation of text, archival newspaper cuttings, historical articles, maps, etc. Find the object and draw directly from it. Document and annotate initial ideas that you think are interesting. Your pages should be visually alive and full of notes, diagrams, sketches and possible ways forward. Draw, doodle, raw everything you cannot go wrong. Whilst brainstorming look at the following:
2. What would we do without this invention? How would life today be different if we had no light bulbs, would we have candles as headlights, no bras - would we support our breasts with our hands or have some really complicated scaffolding support.

3. Produce 2 sides devoted to the illustrators work. Document their work and annotate next to the images, making sure you answer the following questions within 500 words. Choose 2 illustrator from the list below

• In what ways does this designer use drawing? What materials, processes do they use and how are they generating their images? Are they using objects, photographs, still life set ups etc? How would you describe these images? Do they linear, tonal, use silhouette, printmaking, CAD, collage etc.?

What is the message they are communicating? In what way are images clever, humourous and or beautiful to view? What kind of mood is expressed?
• How have these artists\designers communicated a message without making it obvious? Have they masked, hidden heavily, cropped, made parts illegible, made corrections or provoked questions to lead the viewer onwards. Discuss their use of subtle and overt imagery.
• How have these artists\designers essentially made their work creative and original? What sums up this style? Is it an eclectic use of imagery, relation to text, painterly surface, strong use of colour?
• Work in the style of each illustrator using your invention and people. other objects etc.

4. Next connect your exploration with T shirt designers researching both t shirt design and packaging. Produce at least 2 sides of research before embarking upon initial imagery for these formats.
5.
• Look T shirt packaging design on the net to find inventive solutions. Document these.
• Analyse examples of good contemporary design
• How are these T shirts effective designs?
• Why would you pick them up?
• What makes the message powerful?
• Collect in labels swing tags, packaging from T shirts you have. Photograph your own Tshirts if you think they are good. Include these in your research.

6. Find varying examples of each and annotate, look at some of the following designers:
T-Shirt Design
Eduardo Recife
Juicy Couture
David & Goliath
Paul Frank
Quiksilver\Animal
Diesel/THS

WEEK 2/3

7. Develop ideas in varying directions and think about your aim carefully. Produce 10 pages of developmental work. ‘Doing’ is the most important thing, keep trying new things out and then evaluating their success. Illustrators will have many, many initial ideas that are later selected from and it is vital that you generate lots and lots of these to pass this project. Experiment and develop ideas in varying directions utilising materials and processes as vehicles to enrich and build upon.

The following techniques should be experimented with within this project. As far as possible try and recombine techniques:

Monoprinting\Gold card/Lino
CAD
Transfer inks Food colouring
Photomontage Stencil\ Spray transfer
Week 4

8. Develop at least 2 final T shirt ideas refining constantly and picking up on any further ideas you gain along the way. Work to develop your images using T shirt layouts and constant annotation and evaluation. Think of how to get your message over in eye catching, zany or alternative ‘cool’ ways. Will it have a front and back and how will you catch attention across the body? Consider colour, scale impact and the ‘wow’ factor. Is it provocative, use slang or pose a question?

9. Consider the shape of your package, text and headlines, symbols or clever ways to attract attention. This can be in the form of a bag, box, plastic\Jiffy bag, tube, pocket size package, fold-out imagery to display ideas. Your package may have acetate see-through windows, cardboard rings or tubes. They can be wallets, envelopes, bags, use photography, embossing, swing labels etc. to create a fitting image for your invention.

10. When you have narrowed your imagery down to a few alternatives scan or photograph your image and print it out on Make it contrasting to ensure this will show up on the screen..

11. Spend time experimenting with your print trying it out on differing papers and surfaces as well as printing it onto your t- shirt. Layer up collage and utilise within your sketchbooks to get a series of ideas, positions etc.

CRIT. DEADLINE: Be prepared to show your work at all times. You may well be asked to have a crit or make a presentation. Have all your work available everyday!

MINIMUM SUBMISSION REQUIREMENTS:

A full A3 sketchbook containing the following:
10 pages on research and ideas into 1 invention.
2 pages on 2 illustrators work with 500 words answering questions.
2 pages on T-Shirt designers and packaging agencies

BTEC\FOUNDATION INVENTIONS EVALUATION:
ILLUSTRATION OPTION

How this Project has unfolded

You should answer questions in depth and use your individual images in sketchbooks to illustrate answers. Evaluation should be a minimum of 800 words long. Scan in imagery and organise your annotations and comments with page layout. Evaluations should be typed and spell checked.

1. How did you interpret the inventions idea? How did you use your drawing skills at this stage? What did you do first? What did you learn about your invention from your research that preceded you to think of expressing it in a certain way?

2. Recount how exactly you developed your ideas. What sparked off an idea and exactly how did you persue this to enrich and make it a successful?

3. What techniques or processes did you utilise to enrich and strengthen your outcomes?

4. Did you stick to your intended ideas?

5. How exactly did you change your ideas and how have these decisions improved your outcome? Which ideas were drastically changed\abandoned or re-worked.

6. How have designers\artists\others helped your working process? Discuss their style, what works are they known for? Can you pinpoint what is influential within their design? How have they broken rules of convention to express contemporary design?

7. Discuss your T shirt and package:

8. How do your design solutions communicate about your invention and how does it do this?
9. What devices have you used to engage your audience? Consider concept, media, symbol, parody, abstraction referring to Fine Art, a fashionable colour or technique, humour, irony provocative wording/ image, colour, scale, etc

10. Has text played on your T shirt? If so how has this complemented\contrasted\clashed with images chosen?

11. Discuss your packaging ideas and explain why you have presented your work in the format you have chosen and why it is effective? How did you develop this idea?

12. Finally, evaluate your progress. Is there enough material here for 3 weeks’ work? What steps could you have taken to improve your decision-making at each stage? Expand.

Inventions Presentations Week 1

Hold your work up and talk about your progress with this project. In your presentation answer the following questions:

• How have you found brainstorming for this project. What is the best way of developing ideas for you?

• Has your idea got visual potential?

• What makes your idea good, or something that has a link to the invention potential rather than an obscure image which may not communicate fully.
What character goes with your object? Is there a character on TV that typifies this object – stereotype

What information- photographs, objects do you need to help you draw this image?

• On the other hand does your image have imagination and let us interpret it.

• How can you work on more than one image at a time ?

• What do you think about your image? Does it tell a story? What clues does it give us about your invention? Is it possible to understand or too obscure?

• What qualities do you like within your image?

• What thinking processes do you need to go through to achieve it again for the other ideas?

• How have you achieved quality within your drawing? Have you used photographs, observational drawing or other techniques to push your ideas on?

• How have you translated this idea?

• Which illustrators are inspiring you for this project?

• What makes good T shirt imagery? How complicated does it have to be?

• What aspects do you need to consider when designing ideas? Things such as impact, colour, contrasting effects, making sure detail is not lost in a print.

• How would this idea appear on the T shirt? Do you need to crop bits? What about position on the shirt, where is the best place? Is there a front and back?

• Package ideas? Can you think of apt ways of packaging this idea? Could this be to do with a play on objects, ideas of boxes or methods of working we already have? The package may be in the format of an easily recognizable item that relates to the object. ie the telephone may be in the format of a telephone directory.

• Week 1 over into the week 2, have you done enough for the time available? If not how are you going to rectify this?

Week 2

Have you done all the things we have asked for this project and used it well?

You should make use of the differing types of image making so you are versatile and you can improve your skills for University. Competition will be stiff.

Follow up on what tutors are saying and next lesson we see it and try out ideas or other ideas, got to have a go and move forward . Have a go and try it a lot of times. Be prepared to take criticism

All work up on wall must be completed by Monday if you want to pass.
