Rationale:

This project is in 2 parts.  Part 1 gives you the opportunity to explore and extend your experience of techniques and processes.  You will work expressively in very individual ways.  There is an emphasis on using observational skills and responding to this form within a variety of formats.

Part 2 then asks you to apply this information within the following ways :
a graphic design/illustrational context or
a fashion design/photography context
 Aim:

Produce a body of work within a sketchbook that responds to both the anatomical shape and the expressive idea of a wasp.  You are asked to respond using drawing, painting, photography, photomontage, collage, print and three-dimensional ways of work.

Time: Part 1 (3 weeks)

Week 1:          Observational drawing, printmaking, experimentations with type, surface
Week 2:          Photomontage, collage, working with text, typography, mixed media
Week 3:          3D pieces – using found objects, pieces of text, finalising sketchbooks
 Materials:

Required for this project:

·          Basic drawing materials - pencils, rubber, food colouring.
·          Car Manuals     * very important
·          Small scaled objects to make 3D experimental piece:  clock bits, typewriter bits, radio circuit board, mobile phones, audio tape, jewellery, parts of small dolls, tea strainers, knives and forks.

The following materials and techniques should be developed within sketchbooks:

  • Paint, pen and ink, charcoal, oil pastels, bleach, food colouring, jewellery wire.
  • Photomontage using lifestyle magazines, car manuals, as well as photographs.
  • Monoprint, wire prints, embossing, gold card, prints.
  • Acetate drawings.
  • Photography, collages on acetate,
  • Found objects, including wasps themselves which are scanned, photocopied, made negative, inverse experiments using CAD
  • 3D experimental hybrid forms using found materials, relief etc.  These could
  • be very delicate jewellery like hanging structures, brooches using beading.  They could equally be showing small sculptures or combining text within 3D work.  etc  These pieces should utilise the character of these objects and become ‘equivalent’ wasp body parts.

Part 1 Procedure:

Week 1:

1.      Consider the idea of a wasp.  Write down words associated with this creature - its character as well as its physical appearance.  Consider words such as predator, sting, poison, symbols of danger, energy, warrior, insect admired for its industrious behaviour, honeycomb.   Produce an extensive brainstorm.
2.      Start to analyse differing parts of the wasp - the abdomen, the proportional parts, the mandibles and subtle shape of the head area, the segmented legs.  In every way begin to research information about this creature that gives you a much deeper understanding of its features in as wide a way as possible.  Start to present this information in a sketchbook that pays homage to this creature.  Produce drawings, overlays of information, photographs of details etc. of these insects.  Consider how these images are put together to make a celebration and analysis of this creature.  Produce at least 30 sides, a full sketchbook of both analytical and expressive drawing and research.

  • You will follow a series of workshops where you will investigate varying techniques to transform your imagery.

3.      Look at the work of the following artists who are known for their diverse drawing and use of mixed media.

Anselm Kiefer                        Frank Auerbach
Ana Maria Pacheco                 Gerald Scarfe
Terry Gilliam                          Robert Rauschenburg
Jasper Johns                            Alberto Giacometti
David Hockney                        Lucian Freud
Tim Tompkinson
Lauren Simkin-Berke
Florian Nicolle
Alison Lambert
Jenny Saville
              www.itsnicethat.com
blog that has loads of graphics/illustration

Document 2 of the above artists’ work in your sketchbooks, giving examples of their techniques and processes.  Discuss why you find them inspiring and indicate exactly the qualities you admired.   Analyse at least one individual piece, then each of the 2 artists  and discuss in depth their technique, processes and concepts.  Produce 500 words. Look up 2 more contemporary designers or artists that you particularly like.  Document their work alongside. Perhaps look at

4.      Respond to the wasp to form expressive and strong observational pieces that explore shape, colour and varying components.  With each study consider your viewpoint, where you place your image on the paper and the size of each study.  Try to demonstrate fluency within the use of your materials.

5.      Begin to consider the idea of territory, swarming and start to combine images of maps, newspapers, housing, dustbins, picnic bags etc. to refer to their environment.  Consider the concept of workers, insects or ‘soldiers’,  look at words associated with these creatures like danger, poison, keep out, killer etc. aggression

Graphics and Illustration - You will be given a piece of text from the Wasp factory.  Begin arranging this and experimentally using materials to try and create an interesting composition.  Try to play with this around images that you have produced to create an interesting combination of text and image on.    Use other poems, dictionary definitions concerning the idea of wasps.  Vary scale, style of font, surface etc.
Fashion and Textiles/Photography- You will be encouraged to use a range of surface and tactile qualities within your work.  You may wish to explore the use of colour and pattern, motif and shape

Week2/3:

6.      Imagine there has been a nuclear disaster and the wasp is one of the many insects which have survived, yet its physicality has changed.  It has mutated into a new species of varying combinations of part human, wasp and machine.

7.      Using your wasp studies as reference produce a series of collages and photomontage pieces using magazines and car manuals and  quick experimental 3D ideas using found materials and objects

8.      Look up the technique of photomontage and find out about the artists above.  Answer the following questions within 500 words.  Please give examples.

1.       When did photomontage first begin?
2.       Give some early examples, how was it received by the art establishment  Please give background information on this technique..
3.       What movements are associated with the development of photomontage?
4.       In what way was photomontage used politically
5.      Give an example of a contemporary artist/designer  who has used photomontage within their work.

BTEC 2ND YR EXTENDED DIPLOMA IN ART & DESIGN

Part 1 Wasp Project Evaluation

You should answer questions in depth.  You must use scanned imagery from your sketchbooks to make your points clearer.  Evaluations should be a minimum of 800 words, word-processed and checked for spelling.

  1. Discuss how you have approached this project.  Go through the varying stages –detailing how each stage has developed.  Consider brainstorming, collation of research, development of final outcome.

  1. Which parts of your imagery have been successful?  Can you pinpoint 2 or 3 images to discuss in detail and analyse why these have worked well?

  1. Can you pinpoint why other images have been less successful?  How can you learn from this for next time?

  1. Have your observational skills improved?  In what ways have you found your analysis has changed within this kind of drawing?

  1. Which artists/ designers or research imagery have you found most influential for this project and why?

  1. How did you interpret the latter part of this brief displaying ideas about the mutated wasp? Please show pictures of your progression.

  1. What techniques do you feel you have learnt, developed or pushed onwards from previous projects perhaps mention these.  Please illustrate how your imagery has refined by showing contrasting images.

  1. How would you modify or change these pieces of work you have produced if you had a further 3 weeks of study?

  1. Do you think you have used your time well within this project?  What aspects of your process do you think you need to work on for the next part?
